No Elephants Were Harmed in the Making of This Coffee!

I love trying new coffee and I pay great attention to how companies choose to market their products. In my 8 years as a coffee professional I’ve experienced some of the best and worst coffees one can find. I’ve also come across some beautiful bag designs and some rather bold claims.

I came across the latter just the other day. This bag of coffee had more ornamentation than a 4 Star General: Organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, Bird Friendly and (get this)…Vegan!

I have NOTHING against being vegan. In fact, some of my favorite people are vegan and I have a great respect for their decision. Making the compassionate choice to live a vegan life is wonderful. Here’s the thing though… We’re talking about a bag of coffee beans, not a prepared drink (which may contain milk, sugar or products using animals).  All non-flavored coffee beans should be vegan. We, as roasters, don’t add anything to our coffee before roasting it.

To me, the addition of “vegan” to that coffee’s list of certifications was misleading. They didn’t lie. They simply told what should be an obvious truth in a way that suggested otherwise. A way to entice a fast-growing market without having to change or offer anything new.

I think people deserve better than that, so I’m offering it.

This upcoming Saturday (July 22nd) will be the 3rd of my 4 “Summer Nights” coffee pop-ups at Caffe Caldo in Huntington Beach and it will be a vegan night! Not just vegan foods, but a signature iced espresso drink that will be vegan as well.

Our drink, the Vegan Cinnamon Toast Crunch Iced Latte will feature our Good Morning Beautiful coffee blend.

My dear friend Katelyn of The Bakoery will provide 3 deliciously vegan treats designed to compliment the taste profile of our drinks:

If you’re in the area, please join us. We’ll have Iced Coffee, Pour-Overs and of course, our Vegan Cinnamon Toast Crunch Iced Latte. I’ll also have some freshly-roasted beans for sale.

Here’s to quality over gimmicks. I hope to see you there!

Unveiling Spring.

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year.

As someone who lives with Seasonal Affective Disorder the change from the cold, dark days of Winter to the rich colors and new life of Spring raise my spirits and inspire me. It reminds me that everything is temporary, from the rain that dampened my spirits to the newly sprouted roses in my yard. The colors, the smells, the…newness. For me, this season is a beautiful lesson in impermanence and hope.

What does that have to do with coffee?

I’m having Old Town Roasting join forces with baker extraordinaire Salt & Cinnamon for a Spring Pop Up event at the Artistry House in Santa Ana.
I’ve sourced some beautiful single-origin coffees and Salt & Cinnamon has crafted 3 seasonal treats that pair perfectly with each coffee.

Several weeks were spent sourcing coffees,

experimenting with roast curves and tasting cup after cup (often with a caffeine-induced shaky hand) to find 3 of the best coffees available and present them in a way that will honor their regional and individual flavors.

I then turned to my friend Caitlin of Salt & Cinnamon

and gave her the daunting task of creating 3 original dishes to complement each of my 3 coffee offerings. Apparently, I didn’t challenger her enough, because she not only made 3 incredible pairings, but made them gluten-free to boot!

I will roast each coffee 24 hours before the event

and offer them as part of the tasting experience and as individual pour-overs. You can also purchase a pound of these coffees to take home.

I always love coffee blends,

so I created a custom Spring Blend which will only be roasted once and sold exclusively at this event.

As with all my coffees, each bag will be hand stamped by myself and sold by the pound.

It’s getting warm, so let’s have a cold brew too!

I’ve made a lavender-infused iced coffee which takes 24 hours to cold-brew and tastes like Spring in a cup. Expect lots of sweet, floral notes balanced by a chocolaty undertone.

Also, 20% of our profits will go to the Blind Children’s Learning Center of Santa Ana.

lot of thought, planning and love is going into this Spring celebration and I couldn’t be more excited about it! If you’re able, come celebrate with me from 9am to 1pm this Saturday!

Thanks for your time. I hope to see you Saturday!

Old Town Roasting

Well, here we are. My first blog post for the new Old Town Roasting website. If you’re reading this, thank you. Getting to this point has been an interesting journey and I’m excited to share it with you.

I won’t rehash my whole story here…you can read the “about me” on the website for that. For this post, I want to talk about my day job and how Old Town Roasting has grown out of that over the past few years.
